Valetta, Malta to Corfu (and a Greek comedy of errors indeed!)
Arrived today in Corfu a lovely Greek island which we last visited 34 years ago for our honeymoon!. The island has been the a fought over jewel in the Ionian sea since time began due to its location and natural abundance of food
and water. The old town looked the same (hmm might be a song in there) and overflowing with tourists. We
enjoyed a stroll around and decided to catch up on our laundry..... since the ship charges were extortiante and we have another two weeks travelling to do.
Well what a fiasco! We looked on Google and found a great self service laundrette with high ratings 'CorfuLaundry at Kontokali' near the yachting marina. Asked a taxi driver to take us there - he looked a bit unsure and quickly consulted another driver (all Greek to me) and off we zoomed. Screeched to a halt outside a little hut with a sign on the door 'laundry' in the middle of a marina.... hmmm it didn't look quite the same as on Google, but we were short of time so thought it would do anyway. After much haggling with the attendant (a sly Greek) she agreed we could wash - but no dry!! as she had many other 'peoples to service'. Showed her the pictire on Google of 'CorfuLaundry at Kontokali' and asked where it was? Never heard of it she said. Dilemma! - ok just wash we decided. Forked out 10 euros and left it in the machine and went for a coffee.
Returned later to find all our washing strewn over plastic chairs the length of the harbour drying in the sun!! Mortifed we quickly gathered our smalls (not so small actually) and summoned a taxi to take us back to ship with just 30 mins to spare before it would set sail. As we hurtled out of the marina we glimpsed just up the road a huge sign saying 'Welcome to 'CorfuLandry, Kontokali'...... and a very smart all singing, all dancing proper laundrette!!

Not our pic -( didn't have time to take one) - but you get the idea.... |
Safely back on ship and with our laundry happily drying off in the cabin (heating on full blast) we went to another Epic Beatles evening in the on-board Cavern Bar where the fab-four covered the Sgt Peppers album so we had to dance into the wee small hours, but at least we were clean!
